Cuban roots photography exhibition
CASA DEL HABANO,100 WARDOUR ST,SOHO,LONDON W1F 0TN
1APRIL - 31 MAY 2008
Che Guevara, mojitos, classic American cars, sunset on the Malecon, cigar-smoking Cubans, salsa, rumba and rum! These enduring images of Cuba are as transfixing as they are timeless. However, for me, Cuba was a more personal journey into the past of my Grandmother, who was born and raised in Guantanamo in the early 1900's.
With my camera, I back-packed across Cuba, exploring the heart of Old Havana; the cobbled streets of Trinidad; the white sandy beaches of Varadero; the throbbing pulse of Santiago; the 'mogotes' of Vinales; the isolating beauty of Maria La Gorda, until I finally arrived at the village where my relatives still live. When taking photographs, my aim is to take candid shots that capture the feelings of the moment. This exhibition is a visual experience of that journey. Cuba Libre!
